Installing a water filter can be easier than you think. Filter installation varies from manufacturer - some are an internal fit - some are an external fit.

I will try to walk you through the process step-by-step.

This guide helps with most home fridge freezers and under-sink taps.

You get clean, fresh water fast. No fuss. No mess - fingers crossed.

But always prudent to have a bucket & old towels hand !

Why You Need a Water Filter Setup Guide

Water filters improve taste and remove impurities. They protect your appliances.

They save money on bottled water. Many filters fit popular UK brands. Knowing how to install them saves time and stress.

I recommend checking your filter type first before ordering

with the one you have fitted to your refrigerator & fridge freezer

Location of fridge water filter varies ....

a/ inside fridge - towards rear of shelf

b/ inside fridge - front middle shelf

c/ junction between the doors

d/ in grille- base of fridge

e/ inside rear of fridge door

External Inline Water Filter Locations

Other possible water filter locations

a/ under the sink

b/ on top of fridge freezer

c/ rear of fridge freezer

- not ideal as the heavy fridge freezer has to be wheeled in/out.

d/ below fridge freezer - cellar / basement is possible

Each needs a slightly different approach. This guide covers both.

Tools and Materials You Will Need

Before you start, gather your tools. You want everything ready. Here is a simple list:

  • New water filter cartridge or inline filter

  • Adjustable wrench or pliers

  • Bucket or bowl to catch drips

  • Clean cloth or towels

  • Screwdriver (if needed for your model)

  • Teflon tape (optional for tight seals)

Having these on hand makes the job smooth. No last-minute runs to the shop.

Follow these steps carefully. Take your time. Rushing can cause leaks or damage.

  1. Turn off the water supply

Find the valve under the sink or near the fridge. Turn it clockwise to close. This stops water flow.

  2. Release pressure

Open the tap connected to the filter. Let water drain out. This reduces pressure in the pipes.

  3. Remove the old filter

Twist or pull out the old cartridge. For inline filters, unscrew the fittings. Use a wrench if tight.

  4. Prepare the new filter

Remove packaging. Check for instructions. Some filters need flushing before use.

  5. Install the new filter

Insert or screw in the new filter. Make sure it fits snugly. Use Teflon tape on threads if needed.

  6. Turn water back on

Slowly open the valve. Check for leaks. Tighten connections if you see drips.

  7. Flush the filter

Run water through the new filter for 2-3 minutes. This clears any loose carbon dust or debris.

  8. Check water flow and taste

Water should flow smoothly. Taste should improve immediately.

  9. External Inline Water Filters

Most use a small coloured plastic circlip to help lock the water lines / water tubing in place. These slip between the collet at each end of the filter.

They must be fitted as micro vibrations can cause the water line / water tubing to slip out of the fully fitted position.

When removing tubing depress the collet in a few mm. this aids easier removal of the water line / tubing.

Re-Set the Water Filter Light

  1. Manually Re-Set Water Filter Light if fitted on the Fridge Display Panel.

Tips for Maintaining Your Water Filter

Filters need regular changes. Most last 3-6 months. Check your model’s recommendation. Here are some tips:

  • Mark the installation date on the filter or calendar.

  • Keep spare filters handy.

  • Clean the filter housing when changing cartridges.

  • Avoid using hot water through the filter.

  • If water flow slows, check for blockages or replace the filter.

Regular maintenance keeps water fresh and appliances safe.

Choosing the Right Filter for Your Needs

Not all filters are the same. Some remove chlorine, others reduce limescale or heavy metals. Think about your water quality and needs.

  • For fridges, use original or compatible cartridge filters.

  • For coffee machines, choose filters that improve taste and protect the machine.

  • For under-sink taps, inline filters with multiple stages work best.

AAA FilterFast offers a wide range of original and compatible filters. They provide fast delivery and trusted service. This makes finding the right filter simple.

What to Do If You Encounter Problems

Sometimes things go wrong. Here’s what to do:

  • Leaks: Tighten connections. Use Teflon tape if needed.

  • No water flow: Check if the valve is fully open. Inspect the filter for blockages.

  • Bad taste or smell: Replace the filter. Flush the system again.

  • Filter won’t fit: Double-check model compatibility. Contact supplier for advice.

Don’t force parts. If unsure, ask a professional or contact your filter supplier.
